Starting today, the Web site of the New York State Unified Court System will inform visitors about an individual attorney's disciplinary status.

Previously, the online lawyer directory provided only an attorney's name, registration number, firm, firm address and phone number.

Online users will now be able to learn whether a lawyer has been suspended or disbarred, as well as what year the lawyer was admitted and where he or she went to law school.

According to a statement issued by the courts, the online directory was upgraded to make it easier for the public to check up on lawyers, especially in immigrant communities where bogus lawyers are common.
